An Interview With Goshi Yamaguchi - by Graham Noble

An Interview With Goshi Yamaguchi

by Graham Noble

Introduction:

I met Goshi Yamaguchi at the IKGA (International Karate Do Goju Kai Association) gasshaku held in England in 2008. I was interested in meeting and interviewing him because, besides being an important figure in karate in his own right, he is of course the third son of the famous Gogen Yamaguchi and the inheritor of his school. When we met he was immediately very friendly and open and patiently answered all my questions about Goju-ryu and his legendary father.

Earlier this year I was fortunate enough to meet Shihan Francis Hong. I could tell you all about him, but instead I asked Francis if he would mind doing an interview. Here it is... Enjoy.

Meitoku Yagi Interview

Interview Meitoku Yagi (Gojuryu)

by Paul Babladelis

The following is a rare interview with Meitoku Yagi (1912) held in 1989 by Paul Babladelis. In 1963 Meitoku Yagi, Chojun Miyagi (1888-1953) most senior student, was chosen by Miyagi's family to receive his masters gi and obi. He began his training with Chojun Miyagi in 1926 at age 14.

Mr. Shuji Tasaki Hanshi Interview

剛柔会 Shuji Tasaki Hanshi Interview

Shuji Tasaki was well known as Gogen Yamaguchi's most compitent fighter having proven himself in the very first All Japan Karatedo Gojukai Championships in 1963 which was basically a days competition of knock-out, knock down, break bone and finish them matches. Having earned the cup for first place it set him as a target to be dealt with in the Dojo.

Today Shuji Tasaki Shihan is a much more easy going person. Still having the heavy and strong voice with a fatherlike teachers touch. He left Gogen Yamaguchi's organization in 1972 to form his own Seiwakai however today remains close to Goshi Yamaguchi and attends functions of the organization, including the JKGA 50th anniversary, as a senior and respected Sempai - Shihan. Today he is Hanshi of Gojuryu Karatedo Seiwakai and one of the most senior members of the JKF Gojukai.

Mrs. Suzuko Okamura Hamasaki

Introduction:

  • 剛柔会 Mrs. Suzuko Okamura Hamasaki
Mrs. Suzuko Okamura-Hamasaki was the 1980 World Women's Kata Champion [WUKO]. Mrs. Okamura-Hamasaki is regarded the first women of women because of her accomplishment in a time when the ladies divisions of Karatedo competitions were seldom recognized. In today's more educated world of Karatedo we reflect on the accomplishments of the women of Karatedo with a different sensibility, accepting women as and acknowledging women as better than or equal to men in our modern society.  We note that Mrs. Suzuko Okamura-Hamasaki Sensei is also the daughter of Mitsuharu Okamura Sensei. Mitsuharu Okamura one of the senior and original members of the Ritsumeikan University Gojuryu Karatedo club with Gogen Yamaguchi, Jitsuei Yogi, Soo Nei Chu, Shozo Ujita, Kinkichi Katano, Tomoharu Kisaki, Kenzo Uchiage, Kuranosuke Kimura, T. Moriyama, Seigo Tada and Iwasuke Yamakawa in the 1940's. Editor - Gojuryu Network.

    Ryoki Abe Interview
An Interview with WKF Kata Champion - Ryoki Abe
    by Sue McGlynn, 2000

If you meet Ryoki Abe on the street, you’ll see a normal-looking man with a quiet, pleasant personality. If you meet him in the dojo, you will see an exceptionally skilled, highly focused, passionate, master of karate. If you meet him in competition, you will see one of the most fierce and powerful karate champions of modern times.
